We took him to the vet and had the crop drained (over 5 cc's of clear fluid were removed...) and put him on antibiotics, but the day after this video was shot (Gimpy was 4 weeks old and underdeveloped because of the crop problem)there was an accident in the barn while we were gone and the power went out. Because the brooder lamps were off for over 6 hours he froze to death before we got home. Thankfully the rest of the birds were developed enough to survive the cold. But not Gimpy. Rest in peace little guy. You were a good chicken.(more)(less)

The disease is thought to be spread via animal feed which contains ground-up animal parts. A 4 oz. burger, Lyman estimated, may have many as 500 to 1,000 different animals in it. Problematically, America only tests 1/10th of 1% of cows for the illness, and typically, older cows that would be more likely to have the disease aren't tested, he reported.
Lyman, who declared, "I don't eat anything with a face, a liver or a mother," offered these recommendations:
1. Don't consume wild animals such as deer and squirrels.
2. If you eat beef, make sure it's organic and naturally raised.
3. Avoid eating chicken-- the poultry is filled with hormones, chemicals and antibiotics and fed manure.
4. Shop at farmers' markets and grow your own vegetables.
