Thousands of people have attended the funerals in Jerusalem of eight students killed by a Palestinian gunman at a Jewish religious college on Thursday.
People at the Mercaz Harav seminary openly wept as a rabbi recited prayers over the bodies of the victims.
Israel's government has said the attack will not lead it to break off peace talks with the Palestinian Authority.
The gunman, who was shot dead by an army officer, was a resident of East Jerusalem and worked as a driver.
Israeli police named him as Ala Hashem Abu Dhaim, a 25-year-old from the Jabal Mukabir neighbourhood.
His family set up a funeral tent outside their home there, adorned with the flags of Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the Lebanese militant group, Hezbollah.
His sister described him as quiet and intensely religious, but said he was not a member of a militant group. Israeli security forces detained several of his male relatives, his fiancee, and a number of neighbours after the shooting, she added.
"They surrounded the building and raided my brother's flat. They smashed it up, took things away and arrested all these people," she told the BBC Arabic Service.
A previously unknown group called the Jalil Freedom Battalions - the Martyrs of Imad Mughniyeh and Gaza, claimed it was behind the attack, Hezbollah's al-Manar television channel reported.
Imad Mughniyeh, a senior Hezbollah leader and military commander, was killed in a car bomb in the Syrian capital, Damascus, on 12 February.
The BBC's Crispin Thorold in Jerusalem says that until Israel establishes whether the statement is true, it is unclear how it will respond.
However, the outpouring of public grief will add to pressure on the Israeli government to end the peace talks with the Palestinians, our correspondent says.
Palestinian Authority President broke off contacts with the Israelis at the weekend after an Israeli military offensive in the Gaza Strip killed more than 120 people.
Settler stronghold
Sobbing and wailing filled the air at the funerals for the eight religious students killed in what the Israeli government described as a massacre on Thursday night.
Thousands gathered outside the bullet-scarred seminary to attend the ceremony as a rabbi recited Hebrew psalms in memory of the victims, all but one of whom were aged between 15 and 19. The eldest victim was 26 years old.

Gaza's streets filled with joyous crowds of thousands on Thursday evening following the terror attack at a Jerusalem rabbinical seminary in which eight people were killed.
In mosques in Gaza City and northern Gaza, many residents went to perform the prayers of thanksgiving.
Armed men fired in the air in celebration and others passed out sweets to passersby.
Hamas stopped just short of claiming responsibility but issued a statement saying the group "blesses the (Jerusalem) operation. It will not be the last,'' Hamas said in a statement.
An Islamic Jihad spokesman Abu Ahmed told Ynet the blame for the attack lay with Israel for its operations in Gaza. "The responsibility lies with those who killed 130 Palestinians in Gaza, most of them children," he said. "We welcome this heroic act and strengthen the hands of those who carried it out. This is only the first of many responses the Palestinian people are planning."
The spokesman, a member of the organization's military wing -- the al-Quds Brigades -- said Israel is "reaping what it has sown in the Strip. Those who carried out the attack have brought great pride and raised the heads of the Palestinians."

The shootings in the Jewish seminary was the first major attack on the city in four years and many mourners at the mass funeral broke down in tears as a rabbi read prayers for the victims, some of them as young as 15 years old.
The gunman, who lived in Arab East Jerusalem, was shot dead by an army officer after opening fire with an automatic rifle at students in the school's library.
However there's still confusion over whether the Islamist group Hamas was behind the attack.
The Hamas leadership said it blessed last night's attack. One official claimed full responsibility, though another cast doubt on that.
The gunman was an Arab once employed by the seminary as a driver who had smuggled in a kalashnikov in a cardboard box before he was himself killed by an army officer passing by.
A short distance across this fractured city and a Hamas flag marks the home of the gunman.
His name Abu Dhaim; he was just 20. These mourners like him are East Jerusalem Arabs who live on land occupied by Israel for over 40 years.
But in Gaza hundreds poured onto the streets in protest at Israeli attacks which have left almost 130 dead in 10 days.
They were also celebrating Jerusalem's dead - some 7,000 in their Jabaliya refugee camp, marching in celebration, many Gazans offering prayers of thanks.
There were similar scenes among Palestinian refugees in Lebanon last night. Lebanese media reported that an unknown group was behind the attack possibly on behalf of Hezbollah.
And as there is some confusion as to just who was responsible it's unclear just where Israel will retaliate let alone when.
In the West Bank President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the attack. He'd only just agreed to resume peace talks with Israel. But the bloodshed has delayed Egypt's attempts at mediating a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and the Annapolis peace conference of three months ago seems like an age away."

Witnesses said the gunman went into a crowded hall during dinner at the Mercaz Harav seminary in the city's Kiryat Moshe quarter and opened fire.
The assailant, who Israeli police said was a resident of East Jerusalem, was shot dead by an Israeli army officer.
The attack is the worst of its kind in Israel for a number of years.
The BBC's Middle East editor Jeremy Bowen says the Israeli government will be under immense pressure to respond - and it will, even though it is not known when and where precisely.
Terrorists were "trying to destroy the chances of peace", an Israeli government spokesman said. The shooting was also immediately condemned by the US, UN, UK and the Palestinian Authority.
The Palestinian Islamist group, Hamas, praised the attack, calling it "heroic", but did not claim responsibility. There was also celebratory gunfire in Gaza.
Later, the al-Manar satellite television station of the Lebanese Hezbollah movement reported that a previously unknown group called the "Jalil Freedom Battalions - the Martyrs of Imad Mughniyeh and Gaza" was behind the shooting.
Israeli security forces have been on high alert since Mughniyeh, a senior Hezbollah leader and military commander, was killed in a car bomb in Damascus on 12 February.
Hezbollah blamed Israel, which denied any involvement.
'Horrific'
Witnesses said the gunman entered the library at the Mercaz Harav seminary on Thursday evening, where about 80 students were gathered, and fired an AK-47 rifle for several minutes.
One of the students, Yitzhak Dadon, said he had shot the gunman twice before he was finally killed by an off-duty Israeli army officer, who had gone to the school after hearing gunfire.
"I saw the gunman and he fired a long burst in the air. But then he disappeared," he told the Reuters news agency.
"I saw him again when he approached the door of the library. I shot him twice in the head. He started to sway and then someone else with a rifle fired at him, and he died."
Another man told the BBC that there had been "terrible scenes" inside the building afterwards.
"The terrorists were shooting on us. We all hid under the cars," he said.
"When we got in... we saw young, 15-, 16-year-old guys lying on the floor with their Bibles in their hands - all dead on the floor because the terrorist guys went inside and killed those guys who were only here studying in Jerusalem."
Israeli police and military personnel later searched the building and the surrounding area in order to determine whether there had been a second assailant, but Jerusalem's police commander confirmed there had been only one man.
"He hid the weapon in a cardboard box," Aharon Franco told reporters.
Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupolianski told Israeli Channel 2 television: "It's very sad tonight in Jerusalem - many people were killed in the heart of Jerusalem."
An Israeli foreign ministry spokesman said "terrorists are trying to destroy the chances of peace, but we will certainly continue peace talks" with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who also condemned the attack.
"The president condemns all attacks that target civilians, whether they are Palestinian or Israeli," said a statement released by Mr Abbas' office.
US President George W Bush said he condemned "in the strongest possible terms the terrorist attack in Jerusalem that targeted innocent students", while UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband said the reports of the killings were "shocking".
"They are an arrow aimed at the heart of the peace process so recently revived," Mr Miliband said.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also criticised the "deliberate killing and injuring of civilians" in what he called a "savage attack".
The Mercaz Harav seminary is a well-known centre for Jewish studies and most students are aged between 18 and 30. It is said to be associated with the leadership of the Jewish settler movement in the West Bank.
Hamas praise
In the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, gunmen fired into the air after news broke about the attack. A loudspeaker in Gaza City reportedly broadcast the message: "This is God's vengeance".
A spokesman for Hamas, Sami Abu Zuhri, said the group "blesses the heroic operation in Jerusalem, which was a natural reaction to the Zionist massacre".
