The film, made for only US$1.2 million,[1] and shot relatively fast in 28 days, was a sleeper hit; it made over US$117.2 million,[2] won three Oscars, including Best Picture, the film was reviewed very well and launched Stallone's career into the stratosphere.[3] The film spawned five sequels: Rocky II, III, IV, V, and Rocky Balboa.
ROCKY
Robert Balboa was born on July 6, 1946 as the only child to a Roman Catholic-Italian American family. Young Rocky was always insulted by his father due to his low intelligence. His father once told him that "You weren't born much of a brain so, you better start using your body" This advice led Rocky to take up boxing, and he trained hard so he could grow up to be like his idol Rocky Marciano (hence the nickname). He quit school after the ninth grade. Up to 1975, Balboa was living in the slums of Philadelphia's Kensington section working as an enforcer for a local loan shark while at the same time fighting the local club circuit, including the Cambria Fight Club, nicknamed "The Bucket of Blood". By this time, Rocky had fought in 64 fights, winning 44 (38 knockouts) and losing 20 (as directly mentioned in Rocky) . A source of pride for Balboa was that he had never had his nose broken in a professional fight, though this would happen in his first fight with Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers).
MICKEY
Mickey Goldmill was born on April 7, 1910 to a Jewish family (this was not revealed until the third movie at his funeral in a synagogue).
He boxed professionally from 1922 until 1947, but never gained any measure of fame. Goldmill recalled that he once knocked an opponent out of the ring the same day that Luis Firpo did the same to Jack Dempsey September 14, 1923. Goldmill claimed that the reason his feat didn't garner any media attention was that he didn't have a manager while Dempsey did. He retired in 1947.
Some time after his retirement (in 1948), he opened a boxing gym in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Mighty Mick's Boxing, and began to train fighters.(more)(less)
