We were going to video a different siren but found out that this old T-bolt may be coming down as the building it is on ...We were going to video a different siren but found out that this old T-bolt may be coming down as the building it is on is due for some renovation. So we thought it deserved to be seen by everyone. It's been there a long time looking over downtown. It turns very slowly (2 RPM) and has a little "burp" as it winds down. Needs a paint job too. Hope if they take it down, it gets refurbished and put back up in this location or somewhere else here in town. You can also hear a 2001 and STL-10 in the video.
Update: On October 14, 2008 this siren was removed as the building is getting renovated. Don't know where it went or if it will get put back when construction is done. Hope to see it back up and running soon.(more)(less)

Since the end of the Cold War the concept has been replaced by a more general intent to protect the civilian population in times of peace as well as in times of war. In some countries, the all-encompassing nature of civil defense is denoted by using name "total defense" such as the Swedish word totalförsvar. The name suggests committing all resources, hence the term total, of the nation to the defense. It can be compared to total war.
The biggest threats from a nuclear attack are effects from the blast, fires and radiation. There is also the possibility of terrorists employing a radioactive "dirty bomb". One of the most prepared countries for a nuclear attack is Switzerland. Almost every building in Switzerland has an abri (shelter) against the initial nuclear bomb and explosion followed by the fallout. Because of this, many people use it as a safe to protect valuables, photos, financial information and so on. Switzerland also has air-raid and nuclear raid sirens in every village.(more)(less)

The Battle of Los Angeles refers to an unidentified flying object event which took place from late February 24 to early February 25, 1942 in which eyewitness reports of an unknown object or objects over Los Angeles, California triggered a massive anti-aircraft artillery barrage.
Initially the target of the barrage was thought to be an attacking force from Japan, but it was later suggested to be a lost weather balloon, a blimp, a Japanese fire balloon or psychological warfare technique, staged for the benefit of coastal industrial sites, or even an extraterrestrial aircraft. The true nature of the object or objects remains unknown.
