The Total Gym is versatile to use for combination exercises. You can transition from one exercise to the other in rapid succession as well as use exercises which involve 2 separate motions.
This hamstring curl along with crunch or sit up is a great way to work your hamstrings and glutes while you get some abdominal work in.
To perform this properly, sit on the very top of the Total Gym bench and put your feet in the leg attachment.
Curl yourself as high as you possibly can with your hamstrings, SQUEEZE YOUR GLUTES, keep them squeezed while you perform a crunch, lifting your shoulders off of the bench.
It is easiest to have hands in front of chest, but you can put them behind your head to make the exercise more difficult.
Remember, with the Total Gym the higher angle you have the machine set up at the more difficulty.
If you are prone to tight hamstrings, this exercise probably is not the best. Read about muscle imbalances first...

This is part four of my advanced pushup series. I will be doing 5 different types of advanced pushups and then I will combine them into one heck-of-a-chest workout.
This is a 'squeezer'. It combines an isometric fly and a pushup.
This is NOT a beginners exercise, it is for advanced bodybuilders only. If you have not been lifting for at least 6 months, dont even consider doing this because you will most likely get injured.
There are several other unique exercises in my advanced pushup series that I will be putting up individually also. Thanks for your patience, the advanced pushup video IS coming but it takes a long time to edit.
Anyone can be healthier, have more energy, sleep better, and feel better about themselves through bodybuilding. Bodybuilding doesn't have to be expensive or take a lot of time, gyms are great but home workouts can save you time and money. A cheap dumbbell set from a garage sale or walmart is all it takes to get started with your home workouts.

Here are some good squat jumps to perform on the total gym.
These will give you a good burn in your quadriceps but will not be the best exercise to help you develop explosive power.
You can hold a weight plate across your chest for extra resistance.
A total gym is a solid all in one workout machine for your home.

Beginners can have a higher total gym bench for this plank exercise.
The lower the bench is, the more difficult this will be.
If you push your arms forward, make sure you can keep your core drawn in tightly as well as have your glutes isometrically contracted.
Your torso should remain motionless and your lower back should not hurt.
If your lower back hurts during the plank you most likely have muscle imbalances. You can learn about muscle balance and posture here:

This is part three of my advanced pushup series. I will be doing 5 different types of advanced pushups and then I will combine them into one heck-of-a-chest workout.
This is a hip-pushup. It is very intense because almost 100% of your bodyweight is on your chest and almost none is on your feet. In this pushup variant, your hands pushup from your hips and your arms brush along your sides as you go up.
This is NOT a beginners exercise, it is for advanced bodybuilders only. If you have not been lifting for at least 6 months, dont even consider doing this because you will most likely get injured.

Total Gym supine lateral raises are a tough version of lateral raises.
You see the very low level which is challenging.
Having your body at a slight decline angle can be an advantage to pumping your muscles up according to an old bodybuilder friend of mine.
The total gym lateral raise would be a great exercise to finish off a lateral raises because the extra blood would be flushed into your deltoids.
There is no scientific research behind this, bodybuilder lore, but I personally like it.
NOTE: This exercise is performed on the GTS which is the gym version of the home total gym.

No single resistance training exercise is good for "toning" by itself.
Toning requires losing body fat and either maintaining or gaining muscle mass.
If you have low body fat and little muscle, this exercise will do a great job at toning your triceps.
Total Gym kickbacks are very effective at isolating the triceps. Kickbacks are far superior on the total gym than with dumbbells.
The demonstration was performed on the GTS which is the gym version of the home exercise machine "Total Gym"

Here is a great chest workout you can do at home with a cheap dumbbell set. Big gyms are nice but when you can get a killer workout at home without the overhead of getting to and from the gym. In this chest workout we are going to do pushups, then with no rest immediately do flys, then with no rest immediately do dumbbell press. Make sure and use a much lighter weight than you usually would on the flys and dumbbell press because after the pushups you wont have much left in you. After doing this set of three exercises, wait 2-5 minutes and do it again. Do 5-8 sets like this and you will be sore the next day.
As with all dumbbell exercises, form is key if you want to maximize your muscle building efforts and minimize the chance of injury. Don't use too much weight, if you can't do the exercise slowly then you need to go lighter. Count aloud "one onethousand, two onethousand, three onethousand" on the way up and the way down, if you cant do this on this exercise then you are using too much weight. The reason this exercise method maximizes your muscle growth is because it confines the motion to the muscle you are trying to work out, if your body squirms, swings, and kicks, all you are doing is taking the focus away from the muscle you are trying to exercise.

These biceps curls on the total gym are a great way to isolate the biceps and eliminate any cheating by rocking your torso like a fish out of water like some people do.
Some bodybuilders claim that hanging upside down before an upper body set or performing exercises upside down allow more blood to flow into the muscles.
They claim a bigger pump = bigger muscles.
Whether they have any scientific basis behind what they are saying is debatable but there is no debate that these biceps curls on the total gym give you a great pump in your biceps.
Remember to get full biceps work do not flex your wrists and fully supinate your arms.

Twisting Rows on the Total Gym are a great way to functionally work your obliques, core and back.
Set the total gym cable in the middle and reach over and grab the opposite cable with a single arm.
Turn your shoulders as far as you can towards the same side as the cable then turn towards the opposite side of the cable leading with your elbow.
Try to relax your arm, pretending the cable is not in your hand but attached to your elbow as you pull it away from you.
Twist back towards the side with the cable which is in your hand and repeat.
Keep your core drawn in during this motion.
This exercise is best used as a warm-up exercise for a back (lats) workout or a bridge between core/abdominal exercises and back exercises.

Sit up tall towards to the top of the total gym's bench.
Grab the right cable with your left hand and vice versa.
Keep your arms the same bend and lift your hands from in front of your belly button to all the way wide out from your shoulders.
Use a light weight and concentrate on form if you have good range of motion.
If you have tight pecs you may want to perform with a little swing to increase range of motion and stretch your anterior deltoids and chest.
