I recently purchased a box of 16mm films at an estate sale. Mostly home movies circa WWII, however there was 1 film loaded on an unmarked reel inside an unmarked box. It consisted of several 2 1/2 minute episodes of Bebe, Zona, and Lou. 3 naughty girls who love to show their underwear. This is NOT p*rn by any stretch of the imagination, but in the 1940s, this was adu*lt entertainment! VERY funny compared to today's world.(more)(less)

"The 61 motion pictures in the American Variety Stage collection include animal acts, burlesque, dance, comic sketches, dramatic excerpts, dramatic sketches, physical culture, and tableaus. The films represented were copyrighted between 1897 and 1920; the majority have been drawn from the Library's extensive Paper Print Collection. The practice of submitting paper print copies of nitrate film as copyright deposits dates from 1894 through at least 1912. The later films in this collection, superior in clarity and production, are from the 1919-1920 series, "Spanuth's Original Vod-A-Vil Movies," produced by Hans A. Spanuth of Chicago."

The short "Second Chorus" performance featured here gives us a sense of what the chart sounded like when played by Artie's post-"Frenesi" group. (The little dialogue coda is a reminder that in the film, Fred Astaire and Burgess Meredith were in "The Perennials" - a college band whose students never graduated!)(more)(less)
