Of all of the videos that I've put up, this site has gotten the most comments! Let me explain why. Johnny was great at doing "put-ons", and doing it well, so that the next morning people would be at work around the water cooler saying, "Did you watch Carson last night? Did you see what he did? Was it real?" Johnny's genius lives on, because people are STILL saying the same things on the Internet! On this clip, Johnny smoothly started out with a premise that sounded real. But as the routine went on, people gradually picked up that it was another clever put-on that was done by actors. There were subtile hints as the routine went on:
1. Johnny usually didn't give away prizes on his show, so that was suspect. And Johnny was a private man, he didn't invite strangers to his house on the spur of the moment.
2. Recognizing an audience member for being a certain number of guest is pointless in itself -- you can expect that there will be some sort of comedy pay-off.
3. The "actors" did their jobs very well -- but, an average audience member is not usally that sharp or articulate on the spot as these "audience members" were, so you knew something was up.
4. When they got into the crazy dialogue about being raised by racoons and such, you knew this was a routine.
5. Johnny would never actually get rude with an audience member on the air and throw them out, that was all shtick.
Jay, Dave and Conan all do put-ons -- but Johnny was very "cool" about it, he'd have you "hung" for a little while, he didn't force the issue into your face like other hosts might do.
Thanks to all of you for viewing this clip!(more)(less)

Jim had been on the Carson Show several times by this point and was becoming one of Johnny's favorite comics. With his wild, physical comedy and impulsive behavior, Carrey was already starting to eclipse his natural predecessor Robin Williams.
This particular show was poignant because Johnny was only months from his big retirement and EVERYBODY was watching the show, knowing it was the end of an era.
Jim was in his 3rd season of "In Living Color" and was quickly becoming the IT boy in Show business. "Why is he not a bigger star?" was the prevailing thought around Hollywood. This all changed in 1994 when Jim hit the international Zeitgeist with 3 big, starring movie roles and a BIG paycheck, reflecting his assured bankability.
Despite his shy, nice guy demeanor, notice Carrey's sly, impish and highly developed sense of subversiveness. Not to mention what a fine mimic and impersonator he is.
In the ensuing 17 years, he has proven himself a fine, subtle actor as well as an exciting presence in person and on the big and small screen.

On October 14th, 1982, Johnny pleaded no contest and was placed on three years probation and fined $603. He was ordered to attend a drivers' education alcohol program. "Chainsaw Ted", gained notoriety in late 1989 for his ability to imitate small gasoline engines. Hurricane Hugo had just passed through the Charlotte, NC area, and chainsaws were a common sound during the cleanup efforts. Brian was on the local "John-Boy and Billy" radio show, and before long he really hit the "big-time" -- he was on the Johnny Carson show! I happened to catch it on my VCR at the time, and I recently decided that it would be a great video for YouTube. Some of the interview after Chainsaw Ted's performance has been edited out to allow the video to fit in YouTube's time and filesize limits. (By the way, I misspelled his first name on the video.)(more)(less)
