... Chris Cerna Blind Pianist Musician Bluegrass Jazz Filipino ...Chris and Chuck Cerna, identical twins, were born on November 27, 1981, in Cebu, Philippines. As a young child Chuck, twin brother of Chris, showed an unusual talent in music but died of cancer before reaching his fifth birthday. During that time, Chris preferred playing with toy soldiers and matchbox cars. At the tender age of 5 ½ , just nine months after his twin brother's death, Chris, without formal training, started playing the piano, which could be considered a miracle since Chris had been blind since the age of 18 months.
Soon Chris was accompanying his mother's church choir. Word of this special youngster and his gift quickly spread throughout Cebu. At the age of seven, Chris had his first concert before an audience of 700 people. Chris received the Perlas Award as the Valuable Filipino for Special Talent from The Philippines Foundation, Inc. for harnessing his gift of music and sharing his talent and skills with the community, particularly those who need inspiration to live productively despite a physical handicap.
Chris was brought to Hawaii by the Aloha Medical Mission in 1991. The mission provided Chris with reconstructive surgery and hydroxyapatite implants. These implants are artificial eyes which behave like real eyes. It was the first time that this type of surgical procedure was performed on a child. Chris' doctor, Jorge Camara, a well-known ophthalmologist in Honolulu, continues to monitor his progress to ensure that his implants are properly maintained and also conducts periodic checks to monitor the possible recurrence of cancer.
Chris gift of music has been enhanced through a scholarship from Ho'Opono, for music lessons with the Ellen Masaki School of Music in Honolulu. Chris is a talented pianist. He enjoys composing his own music. He loves playing jazz, popular and classical music, movie scores and his own compositions. Besides playing the piano, Chris also plays othe instruments such as the tuba, vibraphone, harmonica, accordion, samishen, Indian drum, flute, guitar, mandolin, laud, banjo, recorder and lap steel guitar.
Fortunately, Chris learned to adapt to being visually impaired. Visual impairment has not stopped Chris from living the life of an average teenager. Chris is an avid Boy Scout. As a scout, Chris goes camping, hiking and performs community service with his troop. Serving five years with the Boy Scouts of America, he earned his Eagle Scout honors, the highest rank, on December 2000.
The community has benefited from Chris' talent in music. He has shared his talent by playing at nursing homes, churches and schools to inspire other students, voluntarily.
He is a consistent regional winner of the National Federation of Music Clubs competition for the handicapped for the past five years. He won an award from Hawaii Stars in 1998, first place in the piano competition sponsored by the Morning Music Club of Hawaii in 1997, and won second place award in the State Junior High School.(more)(less)

Former Spice girl Melanie Brown is taking actor Eddie Murphy to court. Her lawyer says she's filed a paternity case against Murphy to establish that he's the legal father of her baby Angel Iris. She's also apparently seeking sole custody of their daughter. Brown's attorney says the actor has yet to pay any child support. She plans to ask the court to require him to do so. Murphy denied he's the father of the 4 month old until a DNA test confirmed the paternity.
It's official...Whoopi Goldberg is the newest co-host of "The View." Barbara Walters made the announcement on the ABC show yesterday. Goldberg will take Rosie O'Donnell's spot as the moderator on the program. She'll start the first week in September.
Actor Chris O'Donnell is preparing to be a dad for the fifth time. He announced on the "Today" show yesterday that he and his wife Caroline Fentress are expecting another baby. The actor married his wife, who's a schoolteacher, in 1997. They already have four children together ranging from 16 months to seven years old.
"Harry Potter" is already up for awards. The seventh installment of the wizard series "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" is nominated for Best Book at the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards in the UK. Daniel Radcliffe who plays Harry Potter in the film is nominated for best actor. He'll go against Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Rowan Atkinson. The awards ceremony will take place in October.
The Dave Matthews band and John Mayer are bringing their music to students at Virginia Tech University. They say they'll perform at the school next month to start the year with something positive. Also in the concert lineup...country star Phil Vassar and rapper Nas. Students and staff are still recovering from the shooting tragedy there last April.

Jobson is a Filipino-Australian who made it to Top Six of the 4th Season of "Australia's Next Top Model," the Australian edition of the popular reality television show franchise. Rebecca Jobson who is just 19 is from Wollongong, NSW, Australia. Rebecca likes to play basketball and write songs. She has a distinctive scar on her face from when she was attacked by a German Shepherd at the age of seven. She works in a chicken shop (!) and is dating a brother of another Australia's Next Top Model contestant, Alyce Crawford.
She created a stir while in Australia's Next Top Model when she was accused of being one among the contestants who allegedly bullied Alamela Rowan. "They made Alamela look a lot more innocent than she was. I would never bully anyone, and I'm really against bullying, and I would never bully anyone just because they're different," Rebecca Jobson said.
While in the show, she was complimented for having the best walk and was compared several times to famous Australian model Megan Gayle.
