Israel "Iz" Ka?ano?i Kamakawiwo?ole (May 20, 1959 -- June 26, 1997) (pronounced [ka-maka-vi-vo-ole]) was an Hawaiian musician.
He became famous outside Hawaii when his album Facing Future was released in 1993 with his medley of "Over the Rainbow" and "What a Wonderful World", which was subsequently featured in several films, television programs, and commercials.
From childhood, his family called Israel by his Hawaiian middle name, Ka?ano?i, the "beloved one". His name would later become the title name of his first solo album, Ka?ano?i, and also foretells the greatness of this "cherished one". It is interesting to note here that part of his name, ano?i, when simplified to no?i may be a contraction of the Hawaiian word, nohi. Nohi means "bright-colored, vivid, as the rainbow" (see Hawaiian Dictionary, Pukui and Elbert). Nohi, rainbow, beloved one, and cherished one are powerful symbols in his life. Iz's recording of the song "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" would become renowned throughout the world and continues to garner high acclaim. The song has come to be known as Iz?s "signature song", the most renowned of all his songs.
Kamakawiwo`ole was nicknamed "The Gentle Giant" by his admirers. He was described as always cheerful and positive, and he was best known for his love of the land and of the people of Hawai?i. Through his consummate ukulele playing and incorporation of other idioms (such as jazz and reggae), Iz remains one of the major influences in Hawaiian music over the last 15 years.
Israel's recording of "Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" reached #12 on Billboard's Hot Digital Tracks chart the week of 1/31/04 (for the survey week ending 1/18/04), possibly due to its use in the Adam Sandler film 50 First Dates, and the Brad Pitt film Meet Joe Black.
In 2006, a version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", in an arrangement based on Iz', was performed by The Worthless Peons in "My Way Home", the 100th episode of Scrubs, over the closing montage. A recording of the same song by Iz was used in the closing scenes of the final episode of Life on Mars (TV Series). It is also a featured song in the movie Finding Forrester. In 2002, the song was used to powerful effect in the closing scenes of Anthony Edwards' last appearance in ER as Dr. Mark Greene, in the episode "On the Beach". On week 8 of American Idol (season 7), Jason Castro performed his own version of this song except that he left out the "What a Wonderful World" line, but still gave credit to Israel for the song.
DEATH:
Throughout the later part of his life, Iz was obese and at one point carried 758 pounds (344 kg) on his 6 feet 2 inches (1.9 m) frame. He endured several hospitalizations and died of weight-related respiratory illness on June 26, 1997 at 12:18 am at the age of 38.
The Hawai?i State Flag flew at half-staff on July 10, 1997, the day of Iz's funeral. His koa wood coffin lay in state at the Capitol building in Honolulu. He was the third person in Hawaiian history to be accorded this honor (the other two were Governor John A. Burns and Senator Spark Matsunaga) and the only non-politician. Over 10,000 people attended his funeral. Thousands of fans gathered and cheered as his ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean at Makua Beach on July 12, 1997.
On September 20, 2003, hundreds paid tribute to Iz as a 200-pound bronze bust of the revered singer was unveiled at the Waianae Neighborhood Community Center on O'ahu. The singer's widow, Marlene Kamakawiwo'ole, and sculptor Jan-Michelle Sawyer were present for the dedication ceremony.

Eight teenagers in Lakeland, FL invite Victoria Lindsay over and beat her up for things she allegedly said about them on the internet.

Eight teenagers have been arrested in Lakeland, Fla., on charges that they allegedly beat another teen in an "animalistic attack" so they could make a videotape to post on YouTube.
Seven of the teens remained in juvenile detention Tuesday, authorities said. A boy who was charged as an adu*lt has been released on bail.
Victoria Lindsay was attacked on March 30 by six teenage girls when she arrived at a friend's home, authorities said.
One of the girls struck the 16-year-old victim on the head several times and then slammed her head into a wall, knocking her unconscious, according to an arrest report.
Later, according to a clip of the video that was released by the Polk County sheriff's office, the teens can be seen blocking a door and hitting Victoria.
"When I saw my daughter in the emergency room, I didn't even recognize my own daughter," her father Patrick Lindsay, said a recent news conference in front of their Florida home. "I just walked in and held her. I didn't want her to see me weep."
"I've never seen anybody's face disfigured like that."
While the beatings took place more than a week ago, Patrick and Talisa Lindsay said their daughter remains scared for her life.
"She is having nightmares over it," said her mother, during a news conference outside their Florida home. "She has multiple bruises from it, from her head all the way down."
Her parents blamed the Internet for the incident.
"These Web sites are creating a space for criminal activity, beating, fights," Patrick Lindsay said. "MySpace, MTV's 'Jackass,' they are enticing our children and desensitizing out children. Now, if they create the best shock video, they are the heroes. They think it is top dollar."
They described their daughter as a popular, honor-roll student and varsity cheerleader, who was "very well liked."
"She didn't deserve to be beat down like a dog," her father said. "She thought she was going to die."

"Just the shock of it happening to you and seeing your daughter in a deformity, that was horrific," Talisa Lindsay said. "It's very emotional."
Rubbing his wife's back as she tried to gain her composure, Patrick Lindsay vowed to get justice for their daughter.
"I'm very upset with these Internet sites," he said. "As far as I'm concerned, MySpace is the anti-Christ for children. I'm going to carry this as far as I can."
Sheriff Grady Judd told NBC's "Today" show on Tuesday that the incident was an "absolutely an animalistic attack."
"They lured her into the home for express purpose of filming the attack and posting it on the Internet," he said.
Christina Garcia, mother of one of the defendants, said her daughter had turned the tape over to police.

"Angels" is a song written by Robbie Williams and Guy Chambers, originally performed by Williams, and covered by Jessica Simpson, Mexican singer Yuridia, singer Beverley Knight, in Italian (as Un Angelo) by Patrizio Buanne, All Angels, singer Declan Galbraith as well as Verena Von Strenge's latest group, Moon Dust, and American Idol Contestant David Archuleta. The original recording by Williams proved to be his greatest commercial success, being certified 2x Platinum in the United Kingdom and selling 2.8 million worldwide.[1][2]
In October 2006 the RTE doc*mentary This Note's For You, presented by Tom Dunne, said that the song was originally co-written by Williams and Irish singer Ray Heffernan. After the song was polished by Guy Chambers, Heffernan was offered and accepted £7,500 for his rights.[3]
"Angels" was the fourth single from Robbie Williams' debut album, Life Thru a Lens. It has been credited with saving the singer's solo career, and is used to conclude almost all of his concerts.

Now, it's just a hunch, but I think most of the heteros*xual male population would agree.
She was great to look at and, in my opinion, had one of the greatest voices of the competition to date.
Sure she got some flack for bouncing around on her knees during 'Big Black Horse and the Cherry Tree,' or for giving America a quick glance at her underwear during 'I Have Nothing,' but she was excellent in every way, already making headlines before she'd even won the damn thing.
I thought 'Someone to Watch Over Me' would've been her top performance, but she proved she could go even farther by singing this song perfectly.
She's MILES ahead of Taylor... performances like THIS prove why.
We all hear about Elliot, Katharine, and Chris. Yet most of the time, I wonder:
Where did that Taylor guy go? What did he do with the title of 'American Idol'?
Where are those 'people' who voted for him, helped him win, then avoided his album (which sold poorly), his tour (which sold poorly), and everything else he made?
Where are his music videos? Awards? Where is his list of accomplishments?
I just don't get it.
And based on this performance, he deserved to go through?
Based on Elliott's performance, Taylor was 'better'?
I mean if you're a Taylor fan, please give me a reason as to why people like Katharine, Elliott, Chris , Paris, and even Melissa, failed.
