Karl Böhm Brahms Symphony No.3 F Major Op.90 Part4-4 http://au.youtube.comhttp://www.sweetcrazyboy.com/v5/video.videos/v/fN31t_vUpdg =========================== Even the summer of 1883 was a period of the greatest importance, for in the wonderfully situated studio, high above the town, which Brahms occupied that year at Wiesbaden, the Third Symphony saw the light.
This composition gave Brahms the long-desired oppor- tunity of renewing his relations with Joachim. Having unbur- dened himself to his old friend at the Musical Festival that year in Koblenz, Brahms now asked Joachim whether he would be interested in the first performance of the symphony in Berlin. Naturally Joachim, whose admiration for the composer was unaffected by their personal differ- ences, took the "proffered hand," thereby giving Brahms the "greatest and most solemn joy. 95 Before it was per- formed in Berlin, however, the symphony was first produced in Vienna, by the Philharmonic Orchestra under Hans Richter, on December 2, 1883; not a completely successful performance. In the Austrian capital the adherents of Wagner and Bruckner had prepared themselves for a vigorous assault on Brahms, whom they could not forgive for his ever-growing fame, and whom they held without justification respon- sible for the sharp attacks upon their party delivered by Brahms's friend, the greatly dreaded critic, Hanslick. Brahms's fieriest antagonist was young Hugo Wol at that time still quite unknown as a composer. His criticisms in the insignificant Viennese Salonblatt were so recklessly exag- gerated that they merely tickled Brahms's sense of humour.
OLD FRIENDS AND NEW (1880-1885) 165
Once, for instance, he called Brahms's symphonies "dis- gustingly stale and prosy, and fundamentally false and perverse," adding that "a single cymbal-stroke of a work by Liszt expressed more intellect and emotion than all three symphonies of Brahms and his serenades taken together."
In spite of all their efforts the Wagnerites did not succeed in bringing about the failure of the Third Symphony. In Vienna the majority of the public was on Brahms's side, and the performances that followed in other cities Berlin alone heard the Symphony three times in close succession were sufficient proof to the composer of the great response everywhere evoked by his magnificent work. The perform- ance at Meiningen, where Biilow produced the work twice in the same concert, was particularly fine. The fame of the Symphony spread even to France, which had hitherto shown but little interest in Brahms. Benjamin Godard invited (12) the composer although in vain to conduct his work for the SociiU des Concerts Moderms.
Soon after the first performances of the Third Symphony, Brahms received yet another invitation to Cologne. In the spring of 1884 the aged Ferdinand Hiller wrote to him 1(13)
"DEAR FRIEND,
"You will be able to guess the contents of this letter. When I left Diisseldorf thirty-four years ago, I wrote to Schumann to-day I beg you to become my successor. My desire is not really egotistical, for I shall not derive any glory from it. But I love my Cologne Institute, and I should like to secure for it an increase of efficiency, and, let us say, of glory. I hope to be able to overcome some of your objections. Cologne is not a beautiful place, but it is neither too large nor too small. . . . On the whole, the people are decent folk, and to you they will behave particularly well, for they will be proud to have such a conductor. They will let you have as many holidays as you want. . . . Don't, at least, refuse beforehand ... I feel sure they will accede to all your requests, as far as ever they can. And so I venture to hope that after having done so much to improve the conditions here, I am doing the best thing of all by encouraging you to become the leader of the municipal orchestra."
